Learn to create your own original quilts with no pattern using improvisational piecing techniques. Students will learn to let go of the “rules” and piece blocks in an intuitive, free form fashion and may wish to begin with blocks or other elements left over from previous projects. We will explore contemporary Improv log cabin style blocks, Improv Curves, and Angled Stripes, plus Insets and Curved Strips.
Use the elements you create to design an Improv Medallion quilt if you like more structure, or use your imagination to put the pieces together in your own way. We will discuss color choices and using simple design principles to create an original dynamic composition.
Basic sewing skills and a machine in good working order are necessary. This class is best for intermediate to advanced quilters ready to take the next step to creating original designs. The quilt shown at right is an example of a quilt the instructor made using the techniques taught in this class.
About Cindy Grisdela
I’m Cindy Grisdela – an Artist, Teacher, and Author from Reston, VA. Color and texture are the driving forces behind my contemporary art quilts.
Browse my site (https://cindygrisdela.com/) to see how I combine line and shape, then add stitching lines to create texture and dimension – a process I like to think of as painting with fabric and thread.

SacMQG policy for workshop, class and retreat sign-ups
Workshops are open on a first-come basis. You must register, with payment, to confirm participation. Workshops are made available to guild members first. Enrollment is opened to non-members 1-2 months prior to a workshop.
Equity Pricing
In order to provide our workshops to as many members as possible, we have instituted a sliding pay scale. The goal is to provide broader accessibility while still fairly compensating the speakers and teachers by having attendees pay based on their financial means. Only you and the Workshop Chairs will know which ticket type you bought.
The breakdown of our fees for workshops works like so:
Standard: This is the base, guild member price for the workshop. If you don’t have any financial hardship, we encourage you to support the workshop with this price. (e.g. you can go to a fabric shop on a whim and buy a few yards without needing to check your bank balance, but might have to save for a new machine.)
Equity: Consider paying this lower amount if the Standard price of the workshop would create a financial burden. (e.g. you need to pause and check your budget before buying a fat quarter of fabric.) Please email Events@sacmqg.com to request Equity pricing.
Pay It Forward: Consider paying this amount if you are able to contribute to ensuring that all those who want to attend our events can. (e.g. you are able to buy new fabrics and tools as you wish without needing to check your budget). The suggested Pay It Forward price is the Standard workshop price plus $10.
Non-Member tickets will be sold at the Pay-It-Forward price, although we do encourage you to sign up for membership! It is currently only $60/year!
Cancellations
For the Sacramento MQG to host professional instructors, we need to cover instructor costs and for that reason, once you register there are no cancellations or refunds. Members may “transfer” their registration to another member; but the guild and its workshop chairs will not be responsible for this exchange, and all arrangements and funds must be exchanged between the individual guild members. Once members find someone to exchange with, they are responsible for alerting the Workshop Chairs so the Chairs can share all class information with the new attendee. If an enrollee is unable to find a replacement, they may contact the co-chairs to learn of any members on a waitlist.
Waitlists
We maintain waitlists once workshops are full. If you are waitlisted, you will be notified by the Workshop Chairs.
Questions
For any other questions about our workshops, contact our Workshop Chairs at Events@sacmqg.com.
